Sunday Salon: Blah, blah, winter blahs

I have no idea how to get rid of the little blue
square to the right of this graph.
Lately, I've become a bit disenchanted with reading.

This month I've started and set aside five different books.  It's rare for me to do this.  I usually have very good taste when it comes to selecting books I'll enjoy, but this year the TBR Double Dog Dare has not exactly been good to me.  I've only found one unread treasure on my TBR shelf so far, some good reads, too, but five books I didn't bother finishing at all.  That's a lot for me.

Maybe it's the time of year, I thought, but I seem to be reading less these days than I usually do.

So I went back into my archives to check the data.  It's all about data in 2013.

Looking at just the two months of January and February since I started keeping this blog in March of 2007 there has been a decline in the overall number of books I read each winter, but thiit levelled off this year.

You can't tell from the above graph, but in 2008 I read a very high percentage of Young Adult books, which may explain the overall decline in reading if you're counting only the number of books read.  I've read fewer and fewer Young Adult books since 2008 when they made up a substantial portion of the reviews here at Ready When You Are, C.B.

I suspect I've read more-or-less the same number of pages each winter since 2008.  I didn't actually count all the pages for all of the books I read each year, so this isn't very good data, but you get the picture.

I don't know where any of this is going, today, except to say that I may go out and buy a Kindle Fire this afternoon.

Maybe reading will be more fun on a Kindle Fire.

I read less this year also. But I was also sick for the first two months of the year. Lets hope our reading catches up with us soon!

Gadgets always make things more fun. I DO find that I read faster with an e-reader, for some strange reason. But I also think my reading has slowed down overall. I blame life...I am finding it very distracting lately.

I'm starting to feel the desire to pull out Excel and make some charts. Must resist. Weather too nice today.

Life really does get in the way of reading. Sad, very sad.

It's an awful feeling, in my experience, to be disconnected from books and reading. At least it doesn't sound like you're being tempted by new books to end the Double Dog Dare early.

I'm not getting numbers this year either, but one of the books I'm reading is realllllllly looooong and two are book club picks that are fine but not what I would have chosen so I'm being pokey with them. Also, they're not on my Kindle. I agree that I read more/faster on the Kindle for some reason. We read a big fat nonfiction book for last month's book club and I was the only one who finished it!

I'm reading a lot less now than I did back then, too - blogging, life, etc. But like Sandy, I find that I read much faster on an e-reader... not really sure why. I'll also include a plug for audiobooks. They're a great way to fit more books into my life.

How apt! A Kindle Fire for winter! :-)

I stopped by your blog today. The blue box looks like it's the legend. You should be able to right click on it and selected Delete.
